Funny thing, trust. It is strong enough to fight off lies and fear, yet once broken it can never be as it was. It is necessary for every relationship but often not valued highly enough by the person to whom it is given. Like a china plate dropped on the floor, it can be repaired but the break still shows when you look closely and it is much more easily broken if dropped a second time. Everyone knows this, since everyone has felt it happen, yet we continue to be careless with it. I suppose it is human nature to lie, or to repeat interesting things that we are told in confidence. I suppose it is human nature to forget about the trust we are breaking until confronted by the pain of the person who gave it. Though we are truly sorry for what we have done, that never matters since it is not forgiveness we need most but the trust we had and lost. Unfortunately, there is no way to know whether or not your trust was well-placed until you find that it was broken. Time may lend confidence but it is certainly no guarantee. Trust is risky business. No matter how well you have know someone or for how long, you are still taking a chance. You may wonder why some would take such risks but the fact is that with trust comes closeness and it is also human nature to crave a connection with someone. Although it can be hurtful, trusting is worthwhile in the end. Love of friends, family and someone special are what make life worth living and without trust, none of that is possible.
