In the U.S., our government is supposed to be a non-profit organization that taxes the people to raise money for things essential for the nation's survival, such as defense. Taxation was never intended to turn Uncle Sam into Robin Hood, nor was it intended as a means for politicians to reward their wealthy backers. Dishonesty and greed have warped the true purpose of our government and have cost the American people the fair representation that we were promised in the constitution. Although our government is still non-profit, this is not because they do not take more money from the people than they need but because they never run out of ways to piss it away.

Despite this, the American people continue to be surprised upon learning that their elected officials are dishonest. The unfortunate fact is that politics is a dishonest business and generally practiced by dishonest people. The most valued quality in Washington is not integrity but the ability to raise large amounts of money for a political party. Each party points to the other when ethical violations come to light but the fact is that both parties participate in the sale of our representation. Although much lip service has been paid to the issues of campaign finance and gifts from lobbyists, very few politicians want to do anything about these things. They don't mind being bought, in fact they rather like it.
